I need a good book.

I'm currently reading Elfriede Jelinek's "The Piano Teacher." I'm not loving it. It's a little too complicated for me. I'm sure I would have loved it when I was younger and had the attention span for such literary complication. But with a two-year-old interrupting my reading time for juice, the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or just plain ol' attention, I just can't get into it.

But I am just the type of person who always has to be reading something. I'm just wired that way.

Anyone have any good recommendations for fiction?

I don't know what your reading style is, but I can name some of my favorite fiction: East of Eden, The Power of One, The Cornish Trilogy, Aztec, The Master and Margarita, and Alas Babylon. Maybe one of those can strike your fancy?

I read just about everything so I'm sure one of those will work.

Thanks!

I've been on a Richard Powers kick, and loved "The Time of Our Singing" and "The Gold Bug Variations." The latter takes some work, though, so probably not the best choice.

If you want some silliness but within good writing, try Jasper Fforde's "The Big Over Easy" and its follow-up "The Fourth Bear." They are police novels but use nursery rhyme characters. He had another series that used literary references but I couldn't get into that as much. As you say, too complicated for one used to dealing with a toddler.

Oh, yes, Richard Powers. I loved Galatea 2.2. Also loved Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Sarah Bird's The Yakota Officer's Club.

I'm putting in an Amazon order now.
